In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
