EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
