The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of the former president's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
